Seven Rules of
Empathy
Empathy
goes beyond mere sympathy; whereas sympathy agrees with the feelings of
another; empathy, on the other hand, seeks to actively help the other person in
a positive manner. Empathy exhibits compassion.
1.
Compassion
looks one in the eye and listens intently.
2.
Look
at the facial expression and body language for clues. [voice tone, choice of
words]
3.
What
is his or her view point or position? [listen attentively]
4.
How
does the person feel? [ask them how they feel]
5.
How
can I help? [ask how to help]
6.
How
may I pray for you? [ask them what they want you to pray for—it may just
surprise you] [unless prompted by the Spirit, don’t pray for just anything]
7.
What
is a kind thing to say? If you can’t find something kind to say---don’t say it!
